Did you notice the goat skins around the oars? Rubber wouldn't be invented for another 100 years by Charles Goodyear.

10/11/12(Sat)23:16

I figure 3 maybe 4 men= approx 1200 lbs. Weights=75 lbs each (maybe)=450 lbs. That's only enough displacement to sink her possibly half way up a window and that's stretching it. It has a snorkle so that tells me water somehow covered the sub at least 7 to 8 feet.(no telling how air got in without some kind of pump) Subs today take on enormous amounts of water thru a ballast system and they're fully loaded with men, missiles, and other heavy steel shit. Ever see a houseboat floating on 55gal drums. So the question remains.

10/11/12(Sat)21:18

technically it dives not sinks but, as SeaFox says, ballast is everything!

10/11/12(Sat)01:06

So who's going to tell me how it sinks!

Also, people used to tie their horse to similar objects!

09/11/12(Fri)13:30

>>20641 Interesting. Haven't figured out what the 'bell shaped' objects are(front and side). Counterbalance weights maybe? Seems like it wouldn't sink either unless it filled up with water (no place for ballast tanks).

My grandfather would disagree, goodgrief. He saw the SS round up the Jews & Roma in his town, later in 1942 he was forced to work in the east of Berlin, similar young men like him were forced to stay in Lagers (German for work camps). He witnessed the Allied bombing up close and personal, the way how he described how you could tell if a bomb would hit nearby is bone chilling. He saw buildings demolished and burning, corpses dismembered, crushed and burning too. He felt the shock waves of bombs even in the bomb shelters.

He saw how the Russian forces scouted out the Berlin suburbs. And was damn lucky he escaped on time, since the Russian wouldn't set them free but send them to the Gulag (he found that out later). Although he did say the Russian troops were friendlier than the Americans when it came to handing out cigarettes and chocolate ;)

I have a friend who comes from Kosovo, his 'liberation', his war was true too. At least in his mind. I have another friend who is Serbian, he wouldn't call it a war but a civil unrest..that had to be stopped. Well we all know how that turned out.

There is no true war, there is only war.

>>20586 "War has been softened today to the degree where the public worries more about the enemy than the home troops."

I don't. Most of us don't, not even the politicians here don't (some softies excluded). What they do see is the cost.
check rest here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_recessions_in_the_United_States ;)

I care for every men & women who fights for our countries and I hope they all come home in one piece (both mentally and physically).
But if I see how much money is spend in Afghanistan to fight a war we can't win, I become frustrated. That money can be better spend to tackle the problems we have in our tiny country.

05/11/12(Mon)22:48

>>20517 Another comment on 'spoils of war' in that the article mentions a 'reaction today'. War has been softened today to the degree where the public worries more about the enemy than the home troops. Used to be the leaders' heads were carried around and displayed on tall poles. Destruction was so complete by Israelite armies women, children, men, livestock, homes, etc were leveled to the ground and destroyed so completely there was no history or evidence of them ever existing (no spoils were taken). I'm not in favor of any war whatsoever (mainly within the last 50 yrs they're all bullshit and drummed up for money and hate) but the troops can't tell the enemy from friendlys. Last true war was WW2.

>>20517 Good info. I can remember as a child there were a lot of those helmets around. Big damn things they were. One could cook a turkey in one.

01/11/12(Thu)14:25

>>20514 you're right:

"Victory Way" was set up after World War I ended—captured German war equipment was displayed on Park Avenue just near Grand Central to help raise money for the 5th War Loan. Each end of Victory Way had a pyramid made up of 12,000 German helmets. The helmets were supposedly going to be given away to large contributors to the 5th War Loan. One can only imagine the reaction if such a display of war souvenirs was put up today."

>>20157 Very interesting picture, Mr. Grim. Seems some might be in disbelief while others in shock and ashamed. The common soldeir could have not known. I went to high school with a German lad named Rolf. His family came here when he was 4yrs old. He often said Hitler wasn't such a bad person, that he'd brought the country together and the Jews were never slaughtered in gas chambers. His parents lied to him and he wasn't too popular with his ideas. Easy to see the skepticism I see on the faces in this audience.

The Unknown Comic is the stage name of Canadian-American actor and stand-up comic Murray Langston. He moved to the US as an entertainer and then lost his savings on a restaurant deal. When asked to appear on the Gong show he agreed with the understanding that he would wear a bag over his head as he was embarrassed to be on the show. He was finally revealed on an episode of Real People.
